Same Number of Digits Smaller number < Greater number
Compare the thousands digits first.
The number with the greater digit in the thousands place is greater.
Example 2. Compare:
a. 5113 and 4625 b. 3032 and 4985
Solution. a. Th H T O b. Th H T O
5 1 1 3 3 0 3 2
4 6 2 5 4 9 8 5
5000 > 4000 3000 < 4000
So, 5113 > 4625. So, 3032 < 4985.
If the thousands digits are the same, then compare the hundreds digits.
The number with the greater digit in the hundreds place is greater.
Example 3. Compare:
a. 4829 and 4635 b. 7359 and 7428
Solution. a. Th H T O b. Th H T O
4 8 2 9 7 3 5 9
4 6 3 5 7 4 2 8
Same 800 > 600 Same 300 < 400
So, 4829 > 4635. So, 7359 < 7428.
